File size after the removal of duplicates

I just searched two files for duplicate photos. The search appeared to be successful, and I was able to remove the duplicates. However, when I looked at the file properties of the two files after removing the duplicates, the file sizes hadn't changed. I re-ran the search again to see if there were still duplicate photos and the search showed no duplicates. Can anybody explain why I didn't recapture the space of disk after removing the duplicates?
