AllDup failing to start

Post by Shooter3k »

I've used AppDup for many years but just recently, it stopped starting and I'm not sure why. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing. I've tried deleting the app folders and re-installing and still, it's failing to start up. The strangest thing is that the portable version works just fine.

When I run the exe, it says "Launching AllDup 4.5.22" and then dissapears

the event log shows a few different messages:

Faulting application name: AllDup.exe, version: 4.5.0.22, time stamp: 0x62f9f402

Such problems are mostly caused by changes in the Windows system, but also by software products that "hack" into the process of other programs.

Unfortunately, the event log does not contain any useful information to identify the problem.

Which Windows version do you use?

I'm using windows 10 version 21H2 build 19044.2006

What info can I provide to debug this?

If an unforeseeable problem occurs when using AllDup, this is usually intercepted with a bug report, which is displayed to the user in a separate window.
Since no bug report is displayed by AllDup, it is obvious that an external error is occurring which is causing the entire program process to crash.
Normally one then checks the information in the event log, but in your case this doesn't help...

We tested AllDup again with Windows 10 and the latest Windows updates: AllDup can be started and used without any problems.

The strangest thing is that the portable version works just fine.
Compare the "alldup" .exe's; AllDup.exe & AllDupPortable.exe (between the installer/portable).

The should be identical (except for the name, for the same alldup version).

Compare all the files within the /dep/ subdirectory.
They too should all be identical.

(In this case, you want to compare the file contents/hash, not simply date/time kind of thing.)

You might try starting your computer in Safe Mode & see if that makes any difference.
You might try disabling, at least temporarily, your antivirus & see if that makes any difference.

so, AllDupPortable.exe and AllDup.exe do not match

1. renaming to AllDupPortable.exe to AllDup.exe within the portable dir does the same thing
2. renaming the installed AllDup.exe to AllDupPortable.exe works to start up the PE version
3. replacing the AllDupPortable.exe with the installed AllDup.exe does the same thing
4. putting the AllDupPortable.exe into the installed folder and running it starts up the PE version of course
5. all the /dep files are identical
6. turning off antivirus still does the same thing

other ideas?

AllDupPortable.exe and AllDup.exe do not match
I believe they should.
They do on my end, alldup*.exe, from within AllDupSetup_4522.exe & AllDupPortable_4522.zip.

1. makes it sound like something is interfering with the word "alldup.exe", perhaps even a firewall?

2. afaik, the only difference between "dup" & "portable" are where the users "data files" are stored.
& that being %appdata%/roaming/alldup or with the portable, where AllDupPortable.exe is located.
(& installer hits the Windows Registry & sets up a context-menu item...)

3. again sounds like 1.

Might try...

What OS & bitness? [10, so it's going to be x64]
Do you have UAC enabled? Do you get an "admin" prompt when you go to install?

Did you check the hash for the installer download as shown here, https://www.allsync.biz/en_download_alldup.php ?

The installer creates a file, in %TMP%, something like, "Setup Log 2022-09-27 #001.txt".
Might have a look through that for anything odd?

Might uninstall & verify that all locations specified in that Log are gone (or at least, empty).

Depending on your settings, you might be storing data in a database file, checksum.adb.
Might try renaming that (though I would not think that is the issue).

AllDupPortable.exe and AllDup.exe do not match
I don't like that. They should.
