Select terminology is in the negative

Post by therube »

(Food for thought...)

Select terminology is in the negative, which makes it confusing (at least for me).

Code: Select all

Existing:                     ---> Proposed (heh):

Select all EXCEPT the first ---> Select the first
" EXCEPT the newest ---> Select the newest
" EXCEPT the largest ---> Select the largest

(granted, it's been this way forever, but still confusing...)

Only that my brain finds it hard to comprehend the "NOT" meaning.

If you say

find the first, I know what that means
find the longest, I know what that means
find the tallest, I know what that means
find the newest, I know what that means
find the oldest, I know what that means ...

but when you throw the "NOT" (Except) in there

find all EXCEPT the newest, I have to stop & think, now just what does that mean?
- oh, "find the oldest"
find all EXCEPT the oldest, I have to stop & think, now just what does that mean?
- oh, "find the newest"

(Heh. Even writing this, I'm confusing myself on those "NOT's" ;-).)
