Don't know if you had trouble with the other board, but (in my very limited knowlege) phpBB boards seem to be spam magnets, or maybe it is a just universal problem at this time with all board being affected?

i switched from phpbb2 to phpbb3 and now i get a lot of spam everyday.
im not sure this spam comes from a automatic spam bot or from some real guys.
if the spam comes from a bot i know how to fix this problem soon.
